What personally works for you when you’re having a panic/anxiety attack?

I have a friend, and he experiences anxiety on a regular basis. Besides medication, how can I help him calm down and/or prevent them from happening? Thanks!

Breathing in deeply and releasing. Start focusing on another subject as to distract him from what is happening.

How do SSRI’s and benzodiazepines work in treating depression/anxiety/panic?

Also, which are more effective. I wanted to know their mechanisms, how both work, how they are similar and how they are different, and if they’re both effective in treating depression/anxiety/panic, or neither, or what.
From what I’ve heard vaguely, SSRI’s actually treat it all while the benzodiazepines just..act as a short term fast relief and calm you down, but don’t actually do much else for you, mechanism wise.

How To Calm a Panic/Anxiety Attack?

I have been getting panic attacks and anxiety issues since February. I constantly check my leg to make sure the vein doesn’t look any different (even though I’ve had the test to assure there is not blood clot) and if I have a chest pain or shortness of breath or anything else twinges, I completely start to freak out. I know this is in my head and that constantly thinking does not help but make it worse. Any suggestions on how to calm down?

Only my wife can calm me when I freak out. She directs my breathing, “slowly, in through the nose, out through the mouth…” that kind of thing. I know it sounds simple, but I just can’t do it myself in that state.

How can I prevent and treat panic/anxiety attacks?

I’ve suffered from panic/anxiety attacks for about a year now. They are brought on by aches and pain, or stress at work (I’m a retail manager). Those who have suffered from attacks before understand that even though you know you are fine, your body tells you something different and it’s so hard to calm down. I want some natural alternatives, rather than taking medication. I don’t have money to go to a pyschologist, so I’m searching for other methods of keeping calm. Any suggestions/sources, especially from those who have personal experience, would be great. I need ideas to prevent them, and ideas to treat them when I have them. Thanks for your help. Serious answers only please.
BTW- I was on lexapro for 6+ months and took klonopin when needed, but I don’t want to go that route again. I don’t want to be on medication ;)

Try looking up cognitive therapy on the internet. It worked for me a great deal.
